Top 5 UK cities for a study abroad programme

October 24th, 2011

Britain’s cities are unique, each with a distinct personality and overall feel. While the task of choosing one over another is difficult, there are some that seemingly have all the ingredients in the right combinations, making them truly great student cities.

Bristol

Bristol’s urban culture has produced the likes of Banksy and trip hop acts such as Massive Attack. Its creative soul is reflected in the wide choice of entertainment options – ranging from avante garde theatre through to innovative museums such as M Shed. The city is small enough to navigate on foot and has a dedicated student area in Clifton.

Leeds

Combining impressive architecture, a relatively low cost of living, and a student population of more than 200,000, Leeds is a down-to-earth city with a friendly vibe. Home to a number of internationally recognised centres of learning, students hoping to learn Spanish in Leeds or indeed, any other language, are well catered for.

Liverpool

Designated as the European City of Culture in 2008, Liverpool is an immensely rewarding city for visiting students. Once blighted by poverty, the city has since redeemed itself and now boasts everything from the Tate art gallery through to a bustling waterfront area. Nightlife is varied, with the strong tradition of local music continuing unabated since the days of the Beatles.

London

Nearly half of all Britain’s ethnic minorities live in London. More than 300 languages are spoken in the capital’s schools, and this is reflected in the richly diverse culture that pervades the city. With its highly developed transport links, endless supply of entertainment options and historical importance, London is a language learner’s dream. For those seeking a language school UIC is one of the many operations with a base in the capital.

Birmingham

As Britain’s second largest city, Birmingham is also one of the country’s most cosmopolitan. Situated in the heart of England, the city provides the perfect base from which to explore everything from the Peak District to the wilds of Wales.

The city was a driving force of the industrial revolution and retains much of its historical architecture, albeit with a rejuvenated twist. As Bill Clinton said after a visit to the city: ‘I was astonished at the G8 [summit] when I saw how beautiful it was. The buildings, the art, the use of water, it is an extraordinary jewel of a city.’ Birmingham’s diversity, and the fact that it is home to more than 50,000 students, makes it a good choice for language learners hoping to easily blend in.
